How to plant a bulb lasagne for long lasting floral displays
Spring pot displays are a welcome addition to any space and autumn is the perfect time to prepare. By planting bulbs between September and December, you can ensure beautiful blooms from early in the New Year. For a long lasting display, bulbs can be planted in what is known as a bulb lasagne.
A bulb lasagne is essentially layers of bulbs planted at different depths, which bloom at different times to create a lengthy and dense pot display. Depending on the depth of the pot, bulb lasagnes can be two or more layers. The deepest layer contains the largest and latest flowering bulbs with higher layers containing earlier flowering bulbs.
A perfect Spring display can be created using narcissus (daffodil), crocus and tulips. Tulip bulbs form the deepest layer, as they will flower last. Tulips will flower from March onwards and continue to flower for up to six weeks. For the middle layer, narcissus is perfect. They will provide a display from February and can flower into May. Crocus forms the top layer, blooming from January onwards. As each layer blooms, the next layer will be sprouting from the pot and pushing up through the existing flowers. This will create a dense, showy display which lasts from January until late May – five months of joy!
When planting in this way, bulbs can be planted closer together and deeper than usual. Make sure there is adequate drainage by adding gravel and stones to the bottom of the pot where there should also be a drainage hole.
Finally, add some gravel to the pot to retain moisture and add a decorative finish. The addition of chicken wire or a cloche over the top will also prevent squirrels and other garden visitors eating your bulbs! Water the pot initially and then keep the soil moist as the roots grow. Protect from sever frosts by placing in a sheltered spot or by insulating the pot with bubble wrap. The pot can be placed in its final position as it starts to flower.
