First, choose a large pumpkin which will have enough space for 3-4 small plants. Next, you need to cut off the top, hollow out the inside and add compost (ideally peat-free). If you want to extend the life of your planter, consider placing a pot into the pumpkin to avoid the soil touching the rind.
Then you will need to choose and position your plants. In this planter a mixture of heuchera, autumn fern, winter pansy and double daisy have been chosen for an autumnal feel.
Finally, once you have positioned your plants, top up the planter with more compost, ensuring gaps are filled and the plants are secure. A gentle watering will help bed the plants in.
The pumpkin should last for a few weeks before it is past its best but remember that the plants and compost can be taken out and made into another display or added to the garden border.
